WHY IS ABSTRACT SUCH A POPULAR GENRE? | Article by Martin Osner

In the case of pure abstract art, where there is no connection to reality at all, the viewer needs to explore the depths of their imagination to find links, references and personal experiences within a non-figurative illustration. So what does this mean? Well, when you view a pure abstract that has no direct relation to reality, certain elements may start looking like something to you. Some may see a face, some a building, and yet to others a person walking on the beach, etc. It is entirely personal and subjective. Abstract art, throughout its short history, has challenged the imagination of society. Complete abstraction without any reference to reality is undoubtedly the most mutually exclusive form of art, which only really appeals to a smaller audience. But abstract art is not all about in-depth visual content that challenges one's imagination. Other forms of abstract art make use of reality triggers. Slightly more literate and softer on the eye is abstract impressionism and more in-depth, but still reality-based is abstract expressionism. Both of these art movements are very popular today. It is worth noting that, like all the great art movements, abstract painting in its early days equally was met with harsh criticism. In abstract expressionism, the artist works with reality but from an inward perspective. Distortion and unnatural colour are employed to present an emotional connection as opposed to physical reality. Abstract expressionism is about experiencing moods and emotions put forward from the artist's point of view. Expressionism is where the artist invites the viewer to share their emotions, feelings and beliefs. It has more to do with the artists intent and point of view rather than the viewers summary. Abstract impressionism is different, and many art historians would agree that the invention of the camera and its slow shutter speeds had a lot to do with introducing and growing this art movement. On the other hand, abstract impressionism utilises recognisable shape at its core. It delivers it to the viewer as an impression similar to what we would experience in a dream. Abstract impressionism, in comparison to expressionism, is a lot softer on the eye. It is more peaceful and dreamy. For this reason, it is an excellent choice for photo wall art. In summary, when choosing abstract art, you can place a piece of art that is entirely abstract, but regardless remains special and is personal to you. This abstract art genre will usually challenge other viewers who may need to dig deep to find their connection. It often comes down to a "love it - hate it" scenario. Otherwise, if you prefer expressionism, you will be invited to understand and ultimately connect with the artist's emotions and perspective. Also, very personal art and can be equally subjective and challenging. Both total abstract and abstract expressionism are great art choices for private spaces in one's home, like a study or a lounge or library, a place where one finds comfort in privacy and contemplation. Abstract impressionism is quite the opposite as here there is an immediate connection with reality; the viewer does not need to work as hard at finding meaning and intent. As already mentioned, impressionism is softer on the eye and perfect for personal relaxed and peaceful spaces like a bedroom. This form of abstraction also works well in hotels and business environments, especially where a more tranquil, less challenging theme is essential. One great benefit that abstract art has over realism is that you are less likely to grow tired of it as it is unique and subjective, making abstract an acquired taste in art with long term value.
